World famous artists including Damien Hirst and Rachel Whiteread have designed unique chess sets for a special exhibition currently on display at the Reykjavik Art Museum, Iceland.

Damien Hirst explores the world's obsession with mortality by casting medicine bottles in silver and glass with engraved labels on a mirrored glass board upon a surgical trolley.


Italian artist Maurizo Cattelan, famous for his installation of Pope John Paul II squashed by a meteorite, has made a chess set populated by good and evil figures. On the black side are Adolf Hitler and Cruella deVil, opposed by Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa, among others.


Jake and Dinos Chapman have chosen to create a game played by post-apocalyptic adolescents; one side white with blonde styled haircuts, the other black with afro hair, and complete with its own handcrafted wooden games box, and board inlaid with double-headed skull and crossbones.


For his chess set Tom Friedman uses mixed media to create a random selection of objects, often referencing his larger work. The king on the white side is an exact replica of one of his previous large scale works...
